The mind of a great artist

As an artist in the hair industry every head of hair is a canvas. Our minds tend to yearn to remold shape and bring brilliant dimensions of color to most heads of hair.

As time goes on the craving for an inner understanding of how hair grows enters our minds. The hair bulb is the source of how hair will look visually. That is why, with a clear understanding, many of us recommend intense nutrients for your scalp. The more someone focuses on keeping a healthy scalp their planted hair bulbs will thrive in a well-balanced environment. Everyone should treat their scalp and then treat their hair separately.

My clients who use a prescriptive regimen of scalp nutrients (scalp oils) and treat their hair with additional weekly treatments (think intense hydrating Shea butter) have thicker, shinier, healthier hair.

If you have not been introduced and need information on how to go about improving the quality of your hair then find an artist or a salon that focuses on how to achieve this for you.

Let's Talk Hair Loss

Is hair loss a reoccurring thought floating around in your head day after day?

Hereditary Female Hair Loss Patterns
There are a myriad of causes besides hereditary factors that affect hair growth.  Fact is, it happens to more of us than you think! So now that you’re thinking about it let’s talk causes, solutions and prevention.

Men and women are both affected by hereditary and temporary hair loss.  Stress, cancer treatments, pregnancy, thyroid issues, and some medications are just some of the causes of temporary hair loss. High levels of oil and collagen can tighten around the hair bulb reducing nutrition and circulation. There are options out there besides hair implants or just accepting your fate.

Complexe 5 enhances the effectiveness of treatments up to 10 times!
Rene Furterer hair care products provide two treatment plans based on the type of hair loss. Both treatment systems start with cleansing the scalp with Complexe 5, which increases microcirculation as well as nourishes the scalp.  Everyone should use this regardless of their situation as a healthy scalp equals healthy hair.

Both permanent and temporary hair loss clients will find Rene Furterer Forticea shampoo strengthens the hair bulb and helps to hold the hair on to the scalp while continuing to stimulate microcirculation and delivering essential nutrition to the hair bulb.

Triphasic should be used twice a week for one month then once per week

Triphasic VHT treatment is formulated for those with hereditary (progressive) hair loss. It works against the three factors responsible for thinning hair by increasing microcirculation, regulating oil production, and preventing the tightening of collagen.

RF 80 should be used once per week for a three month period.

For those with temporary hair loss, RF 80 is the answer. RF 80 improves the hair’s structure by stimulating cell renewal and production, increasing circulation, delivering increased nutrition, and promoting keratin formation.

These products are best used according to the manufactures instruction and all our stylist are highly trained to recommend which system will work best for you!

At ferricchia we love looking great, but what we love more is all things that are healthy and safe for our bodies! This is why we provide true plant based hair care products – but, what about your nails…?

Our nail care system is free of formaldehyde, phthalate, and nitrocellulose (say goodbye to yellow stained nails, oh yeah!)

It's certainly okay to paint your nails yellow....

... but don't stain them yellow!

We use a non-toxic, non-yellowing, hypoallergenic nail polish system that dries in only five minutes, how nice is that!?! And it’s great for young kids too!

You're never too young for some pampering!

Get a manicure and ferricchia and hide your nails in shame no more!

End of Summer Hair

That’s right, it’s the end of summer, and that means it’s time to indulge your locks with a reviving treatment. Autumn is a great time to start a hair regiment sure to carry you through the long cold winter months. Start now, with a hair care prescription and your hair will be sure to make it through to a healthy spring!

Our first recommendation is to start with a shampoo geared towards cleansing and repairing your hair. We love Rene Furterer’s Intense Nourishing Karite Shampoo for its rich but gentle cleansing power that nourishes and revives damaged hair and scalp.

Sensitive scalp? Try Rene's Astera!
Complexe 5
Speaking of your scalp, a healthy scalp means healthy hair and now is no time to neglect those precious hair bulbs! Complexe 5 Regenerating Plant Extract provides a deep scalp cleanse and stimulates micro-circulation.

Next, we have to talk conditioner, one that really works – not something you rinse out after less than a minute! Think a luxurious herbal blend of Carthamus (Safflower) oil, Vitamin B5, Rosemary, and Bergamot packed into a gentle but hydro-nutritive Cartham mask. Squeeze out any excess moisture then let your hair drink up this nutritious delight for two to five minutes.

Last, but most certainly not the least important step, is a serum. A leave-in treatment designed to provide intense nutrition throughout the day, we can’t live without Rene Furterer’s Karite No Rinse Repairing Serum. Rich in shea oil, treating your hair for a minimum of twice a week will do wonders for your locks!

Trust us, these basic steps will result in thicker, shinier, faster growing hair. By spring time your hair will be the topic (and envy) of all your friends conversations!

Summer is almost here!

Are You Ready For Your Sun-Kissed Glow?

Now that winter is finally over (thank goodness), it’s time to start working on our summer style; first and foremost, our hair. Let’s face it, if our hair looks great, we look great!

It’s time to break away from that dull, all over color we typically fade into during the long winter months and it’s time to freshen up our look with some new highlights!

Whether you are brunette, blonde, red or anything in between, highlights are the answer to brighten up your look.  At Ferricchia Hair Salon we will create a unique formula specific for your hair. Whether you are looking for a more dramatic look or a soft, subtle glow, our stylists are ready to create the look you desire.

Just remember, proper hair care is required to ensure the longevity of your color. At Ferricchia we love PhytoMist. PhytoMist is a weightless leave-in conditioner that detangles, boosts radiance and shine and, most importantly, protects your color from the suns harmful UVA and UVB rays.

So the question remains: Are you ready for that Sun-Kissed Glow?

Stay looking fabulous all summer long!

Balayage! “They’re not your mother’s highlights.”

“Roots are in! Its modern and the look has everyone from Hollywood A-list to your local news anchors changing their color to this look. The best part about the Balayage look is that you can make it your own.

Sarah Jessica Parker with her stunning Balayage

For blonde clients we love the carmel and golden tones with some brighter light pieces around the face and toward the ends. The seamlessness and precision of this application can leave the hair looking like you’ve been on the beach in the South of France for three months.  Think Gisel!

Gisele's Balayage highlights look so natural

For brunettes the brighter red/mahogany tones can really add a nice twist. Balayage is French for sweeping.

The beautiful Jessica Biel with her Balayage look

As colorists' we love it. It allows us to be more creative with each client. Here at Ferricchia we love color and love all the current changes. Come see us, we'd love to help you decide which style is the best for you!
Happy Spring! xoxo

Fascinating Fringe

Golly,
Let's talk about the very thing our blog's name is inspired by : Fringe, AKA bangs.

Reese Witherspoon's gorgeous bang.
Today there are so many styles of fringe out there: everything from subtle face framing wisps to bold blunt bangs. There are baby doll or pixie bangs as well as a side-swept look that can be a bit more non-committal.
Zooey Deschanel's fringe has become synonomous with her look.
There seems to be a style out there to suit everyone. Do you gravitate toward an edgy punk aesthetic or do you prefer a classic and polished look? We can guarantee there is a type of fringe out there that will flatter your face and appeal to your sense of style. During a consultation, our stylists will help you determine the look you aspire to achieve and make that look work on you!

Fringe can minimize some "flaws" (we think quirks are beautiful, by the way) like a high forehead or strong jawline by framing your face accordingly.  It can also accentuate your personal style. Take Haley Bennet's short asymmetrical fringe. She is a classic beauty but her bangs convey a certain playfulness or whimsy.

Haley Bennett's short, asymmetrical bang. Rockin'!
Some looks are super stylized, like Dita Von Tesse or Katy Perry who choose to take their fringe in a decidedly retro direction. It's a high impact look, especially when paired with a to-die-for vintage dress and cat eyes or matte red lips.

Dita's VERY retro inspired fringe.

Miss Hathaway's long, sideswept fringe.

Fringe works beautifully with all hair lengths. With a cropped or pixie cut, bangs are a stunning way to complete the look. Anne Hathaway's current look is a Divine example.  Camilla Belle wears long, blunt bangs that fall below her brow line. Very dramatic and very high- impact.

Fringe is in, and there is a broad spectrum of styles that work to flatter all face shapes and features. Come in and get some bangs that will accentuate and complement your look.

Ciao,

Braids, magical and beautiful

Darlings!

Braids are bigger than ever this season (I know we said this last season, but plaits are here to stay and have only gained momentum!). We see them on the red carpet, at the gym, Incorporated into bridal hairstyles. We see fishtails, french, inverted. Braids truly are everywhere and the possibilities of how to wear them is endless.
A braided style done right here on the floor at Ferricchia.
Once reserved for little girls on the playground,  braids have become a sophisticated option for grown women. With all these choices, how does one pick the right braid for themselves? The truth is, you can probably rock whatever braid-style most appeals to you. These styles are universally flattering and add a quirky yet polished finish to any look.
Here are some of our favorites:

The fishtail. Side swept and absolutely appropriate paired with formal attire.

Rachel McAdams rocks a double braid accentuated by a fuscia flower.

Sienna Miller's take on a Heidi braid. Gorgeous!

Wow! Diane Kreuger looks amazing with an embellished fishtail!

Emily Blunt's up-do incorporates the side braid.
Nicole Richie is effortlessly flawless yet again.

Jennifer Aniston's carefree style is as much at home on the red carpet as on the beach.

There is so much great braid inspiration out there right now: look to the red carpet, runways and magazines and you'll see braids everywhere! Come see us, we'd love to try some looks on you and help you decide which braid style is the best for you!

See you soon braided babes!

Cocktails... These kind are okay to indulge in before happy hour!

With the holidays behind us, the time has come to get back into the normal swing of things. Have you been neglectful of your hair during this hectic time of year? If you're like me, your ends have paid the price. Frayed, split, dry and under nourished. My hair is a hot mess, help!
Now that things have calmed down, let's take a moment to regroup and lavish some attention on our long neglected hair!
There are several avenues you can take to restore health and vitality to your tresses. At Ferricchia, we are loyal converts to the Phyto line of haircare products. The great thing about Phyto is that while it makes hefty claims about what it can do for you hair, the claims are true. IT WORKS!
As a treatment line, Phyto offers products geared toward very specific hair needs. Our stylists can offer you an in-salon treatment as well as a tailor-made take home regime.

Here are some of our favorite "cocktails" to remedy of the most common hair issues:

Dry split ends:  A mask is a great fix to deposit moisture back into hair. The PhytoJoba mask is ultra nourishing. You can use it both as an everyday conditioner as well as a leave in mask (5-10 minutes minimum). In addition to this mask, an oil treatment such as the Phyto Nectar oil applied to ends and left on a minimum of thirty minutes (I sleep with mine in) is super restorative.  Oh, and don't forget to keep up with your regular trims- no more than six weeks between cuts to keep ends healthy!

Irritated flaking scalp: Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp. The polliene scalp treatment is a blend of essential oils that work to stimulate circulation and regrowth while soothing an itchy flaking scalp. It smells divine too! A shampoo like Phytolactum has the intelligent ingredient Progenium, which rids the scalp of bad bacteria while promoting good bacteria. Think of it as an acidophiles for your scalp!

Seasonal hair loss/ thinning hair: We have two great systems in the Phyto line devoted to hair loss. The Phyto Phanere supplement paired with the Phyto Cyane shampoo and treatment are perfect for those afflicted with seasonal or temporary hair loss. For hereditary or more persistent hair thinning or loss we recommend the Phyto Lium.

Friziness: Frizzed out hair is quite common in the Winter. Thankfully, it's also pretty easy to get rid of. The Phyto lisse system works to smooth hair. The shampoo and masque are wonderful, and the finishing serum packs the final punch to fight frizz. Anytime you feel the frizzies coming on, a few pumps of this serum raked through your hair will set you right!

Hat head: The word here is VOLUME! We live in Maine, which sometimes in the winter might as well be the frozen tundra.  Going without a hat is simply not an option for most of us. Unfortunately, hats tend to leave us with flattened out hair. A few spritzes at the roots of Phyto Volume Actif spray
and a blast of heat will lift your locks with little effort. This spray is reactivated by heat so no need to reapply mid-day.

Static Hair: Static hair is the naughty cousin of frizz. A little hairspray should do the trick. You can also use the Phytodefrisant/ Lisse serum cocktail  while blow drying to ensure hair is less apt to get static-y in the first place.

There you have it darlings. Some cocktails that are actually good for you. Your hair is thirsty this time of year, so bottoms up!

Cheers!
